Admission to a Master's Programme
Basic requirements for admission to a master's programme at Montanuniversität Leoben are a suitable bachelor's degree and language skills in the language of instruction of the chosen programme (min. level B2).
Students with language skills of at least A2 level can take the required language courses and examinations as part of the University Preparation Programme at Montanuniversität Leoben.

If your bachelor's programme fulfils the necessary requirements according to the curriculum of your desired master's programme, you will be admitted directly. In all other cases, the equivalence of your study programme with the corresponding bachelor’s programme at Montanuniversität Leoben must be checked within the framework of the admission procedure. If necessary, corresponding supplementary courses or examinations will have to be completed in order to ensure equivalence.
The application for admission to the Master's programme can be submitted during the relevant deadlines.
Admission with a Bachelor’s Degree from Montauniversität Leoben
For Austrian Students
Admission to a Consecutive Master’s Programme (Subject-Equivalent Subsequent Study Programme)
If you want to continue with a master's programme that builds on your bachelor's programme (for details, see the curriculum of your desired master’s programme), simply announce this upon completion of your bachelor's degree or send an email to the Study Support Center. If the necessary language requirements have also been met, you will be admitted directly.
Admission to a Master's Programme that Differs in Subject from the Previous Bachelor's Programme
In this case, during the admission procedure it will be determined whether any supplementary courses or examinations must be taken in order to establish equivalence between your bachelor’s degree and the corresponding bachelor’s programme at Montanuniversität Leoben.
You need the following documents as scans:
- Application for admission
- Degree certificate
- Transcript
- Optional: proof of language proficiency
- Optional: proof of completed internships
What to do:
- Send the documents listed above by e-mail to the master.application(at)unileoben.ac.at
- After the equivalence procedure is completed, you will be informed about your admission and any supplementary courses or examinations you may need to take.
- Pay the student union fee and activate your student identity card at one of the terminals at the Study Support Center for the upcoming semester as you normally do.
For EU/EEA/CH and International Students
You need the following documents as scans:
- Application for admission
- Degree certificate
- Transcript
- Optional: proof of language proficiency
- Optional: proof of completed internships
What to do:
- Send the documents listed above by email to the master.application(at)unileoben.ac.at
- Once the admission procedure has been completed, you will receive an admission letter to present to the authorities for the application/extension of your residence title.
- Pay the student union fee and activate your student identity card at one of the terminals at the Study Support Center for the upcoming semester as you normally do.

Admission with a Bachelor’s Degree from Another Austrian University
For Austrian Students
You need the following documents as originals as well as scans:
- Passport or ID card
- Application for admission
- Bachelor’s degree, final diploma
- Transcripts or proof of courses attended at the previous university (number of hours), examinations taken and (scientific) papers written
- Proof of completed internships
- Leaving certificate/student record sheet of the previous university
- Optional: Proof of language proficiency in English when enroling in an English master’s programme (e.g., school leaving certificate where English is listed as an examination subject)
What to do:
1.) Online Preparation
- Create a basic account in the university’s MUonline Make sure to remember your login data so that you can manage your application.
- Enter the application for your desired study programme under the online pre-registration and upload the required documents.
- At the end, confirm that all the information you entered is correct in the summary and click on Send. Only then is your application submitted.
2.) Reviews of Your Documents by Montanuniversität Leoben:
- If all documents submitted meet the formal criteria, they will be handed over to the programme officer responsible and the Dean of Studies for assessment of equivalence.
- After the validation procedure is completed (which usually takes a few weeks), you will be informed whether a direct admission is possible and which, if any, supplementary courses or examinations you will need to take.
- You need to supply your documents in their original form in order to receive your admission letter. You can send them in advance by post to the university.
3.) Personal Completion of the Admission:
- As soon as you receive a positive response concerning your admission, book an appointment for inscribing via timify or come directly to the Study Support Center during our opening hours.
- Bring all documents listed above as ORIGINALS. After they have been checked, you will receive your student number, information on how to pay tuition fees/student union fee, the pin code for your student account and your student identity card.
- Pay the tuition fees/student union fee immediately after your appointment (Please make sure to enter the correct reference number!)
- After the university received your payments (approx. 2-3 working days later), activate your MU-online student account with your PIN code. Please note that this code is only valid for a few days, after which you will have to apply for a new PIN code at the Study Support Center.
- Activate your student identity card shortly after at one of the terminals at the Study Support Center for the upcoming semester.
- Familiarise yourself with your digital curriculum support under Mein Studium (My Studies).
- Register for your courses in good time.

Admission with a Bachelor’s Degree from an International University
You need the following documents as originals as well as scans:
- Passport or ID card
- Application for admission
- Proof of language proficiency
- CV
- Optional: proof of completed internships
The following documents must also be submitted in certified form:
- Complete school leaving certificate (all pages)
- Bachelor’s degree, final diploma
- Transcripts or proof of courses attended at the previous university (number of hours), examinations taken and (scientific) papers written
Documents in foreign languages must be translated into German or English by a sworn and court-certified interpreter.
Please note:
Whether or not the general university entrance qualification is fulfilled by a foreign school-leaving certificate or Bachelor's degree is determined in a thorough examination procedure. This process only takes place after a successfully completed online application for a specific degree program that formally fulfills all requirements has been submitted. Therefore, no statement can be made in advance about the eligibility of the respective foreign school or Bachelor's degree.

- After the validation procedure is completed (which usually takes a few weeks), you will be informed whether a direct admission is possible and which, if any, supplementary courses or examinations you will need to take.
- After your digitally submitted documents have been checked, you will receive a request to send your original documents to the university by post if your application for admission is successful. A letter of admission can only be issued once the original documents have been checked.
- You will also receive information about residence permits/visa, insurance, accommodation and your first steps at Montanuniversität Leoben.
