Required Proofs of Language Proficency

Study Programmes with German as the Language of Instruction and Examination:

For all German study programmes, you must provide proof of at least level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

The following count as proof of language proficiency:

  • Österreichisches Sprachdiplom Deutsch (Austrian language certificate for German) – at least ÖSD Certificate B2;
  • Goethe-Institut e. V. – at least Goethe-certificate B2;
  • Deutsche Sprachprüfung der Kultusministerkonferenz (German Language Certificate of the Education Ministers Conference) – at least Second Level (DSD II);
  • Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (German language examination for university entrance) – at least DSH II;
  • Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache (Test of German as a foreign language) – at least TDN 4;
  • telc German – at least B2;
  • Austrian Intergration Fund - ÖIF Test B2, Integration Exam B2,
  • Certificate for the completion of a supplementary examination in German as part of a preliminary study programme at an Austrian university,
  • School leaving certificate base on lessons in German
  • Certificates of completion of eight school years at a German - language school,
  • Completion of at least two years of study with German as the language of instruction at a recognised domestic or foreign post-secundary educational institution.
Students with language skills of at least A2 level can take the required language courses and examinations as part of the University Preparation Programme at Montanuniversität Leoben.

Valid proof of a languge level of at least A2:

  • Austrian German Language Diploma - ÖSD-Certificate A2,
  • Goethe - Institute e.V. - Goethe Certificate A2,
  • German Language Certificate of the Education Ministers Conference - First Level (DSD I),
  • telc German - A2,
  • Austrian Integration Fund (ÖIF) - ÖIF test A2

The certificates must not be older than 2 years at the time of submission.

Study Programmes with English as the Language of Instruction and Examination:

To demonstrate your language proficiency, you can submit any of these Certificates:

  • CAE (Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English): with a minimum score of 45,
  • FCE (Cambridge English First Certificate): with a grade of C or higher (at least 160 points),
  • TOEFL (internet-based test): with a score of 80 or more,
  • TOEFL (paper-based test): with a score of 550 or more,
  • IELTS academic: with an Overall Band Score of 6.0 or higher,
  • Duolingo: with a score of 110 or higher,
  • Pearson Test of English: with a score of 59 or higher,
  • Certificate of passing an additional English exam as part of a Preparatory course at an Austrian university,
  • Certificate of passing a school leaving examination in English, as long as the school regulations meet the B2 level,
  • Certificate of completing eight years of education at a school where English is the medium of instruction (legalisation required),
  • Certificate of completing at least two years of study in English at a recognized domestic or foreign post-secondary educational institution (legalisation required).

  • TOEFL iBIT,
  • TOEFL Essentials overall band score 3,0 - 4,5
  • telc English - A2
