Tuition fees information

In general, there is an obligation to pay tuition fees, but the majority of students are exempted from this payment due to exceptional regulations. The tuition fee must be paid by students of Montanuniversität Leoben who have exceeded the minimum duration of study including two tolerance semesters, as well as by third-country nationals.

Tuition fees details

As of academic year 2025/2026, tuition fees are:

363,36 Euro per semester for Austrian and EU citizens
726,72 Euro per semester for non-EU citizens.

In addition to the respective tuition fee, the ÖH fee (Student’s Union Fee) including insurance of 25.20 euros per semester must be paid within the respective payment period. The ÖH fee is to be paid by all students of Montanuniversität Leoben per semester.

In the first semester, you complete your admission to the university by paying the tuition/ ÖH fee. In all subsequent semesters, you re-register for your studies with the payment.

A temporary exemption from the tuition fees exists for

  • Undergraduate, graduate or doctoral studies: minimum duration of studies + 2 tolerance semesters (= exempt from tuition fees)

for the following regular students:

  1. Austrian citizens
  2. EU citizens
  3. EEA citizens (Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein)
  4. Nationals of the Swiss Confederation
  5. Students to whom the Decree on Groups of Persons [Personengruppen-Verordnung] applies
  6. Students with a residence permit other than "Residence Permit – Student"

If the minimum duration of study including two tolerance semesters is exceeded, the above-mentioned tuition fee including the ÖH fee must be paid. If a ground for remission (see remission and reimbursement of tuition fees) can be claimed, only the ÖH fee must be paid.

Regular students who are citizens of one of the least developed countries are exempted from paying tuition fees. In this case only the ÖH fee must be paid.

This applies to students from Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Angola, Bangladesh, Benin, Bhutan, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Djibouti, Eritrea, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Haiti, Yemen, Cambodia, Kiribati, Comoros, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Myanmar, Nepal, Niger, Rwanda, Solomon Islands, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Timor-Leste, Togo, Chad, Tuvalu, Uganda, Central African Republic, Zambia.

Non-degree students who are admitted to attend individual courses (without completing a degree program) have to pay the tuition fee of €363.36 and the ÖH fee for every semester, regardless of their nationality.

Non-degree students participating in a University Course (Universitätslehrgänge) or attending the University Preparation Program are exempted from the tuition fees, but have to pay the respective course and the ÖH fees.

If several degree programs are pursued at Montanuniversität Leoben, the minimum duration of study + two tolerance semesters period is calculated for each degree program. Tuition fees are then charged for the degree program in which the student has exceeded the above-mentioned exemption period. It is not important which degree program is considered the ‘main degree program’.

If several degree programs are pursued at several universities and university colleges of teacher education, students only have to pay the tuition fee once.

If you are studying at several universities (with the exception of jointly established degree programs), have already paid the tuition fee at another university and would like to be re-registered at Montanuniversität Leoben, please inform us by e-mail at ssc(at)unileoben.ac.at  about your re-registration for the degree program.
