In principle, no specific GPA or grade point average is required at Austrian universities. Nevertheless, recommendations of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research for the assessment of secondary school leaving certificates and university degrees from certain international third countries may stipulate a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) required for admission.

Only the ÖH fee is to be paid.

The ‘European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS)’ serves to facilitate the recognition and comparability of academic achievements between programmes, universities, and countries. Moreover, this ECTS system is also intended to promote student mobility.
ECTS credits are used to describe the average workload required to complete individual courses, modules, and/or studies. One ECTS credit point corresponds to an average workload of 25 real hours. The workload includes participation, preparation and follow-up work for a course (study time) as well as examination time.
In the city of Leoben, students have a wide range of welcoming and comfortable residence halls at their disposal.

Of course, you can also start your degree programme at Montanuniversität Leoben in the summer semester (“lateral entry”). However, as each academic year starts in the winter semester, and especially the Bachelor’s degree programmes courses build on each other, you may have a greater workload if you start your studies in the spring.
To ensure that the start of your studies at MUL runs as smoothly as possible (regardless of whether it is a lateral entry or regular start), the university also offers support provided by current students for first-semester students in the basic subjects. In this way, nothing stands in the way of a perfect start at MUL.
Of course! There are cooperation agreements with a large number of universities in Europe and worldwide that enable you to spend one to two semesters abroad. A stay abroad not only helps you to improve your foreign language skills, but also promotes cultural awareness, flexibility, increases your chances of starting a professional career, and is also an incredible personal experience. The Montanuniversität Leoben International Relations Office (MIRO) will support and advise you in case you are interested in spending a semester abroad.

Montanuniversität Leoben puts great emphasis on personal support right from the start. To make it easier for you to start your new and exciting student life, you will be officially welcomed by the Rectorate and the Austrian Students' Union (ÖH) at the welcome reception held for all first-year students, where you will receive essential information for a successful start to your studies at MUL.
Additionally, first-semester Bachelor students are initially supervised by tutors, who are higher-semester students, and can also engage and connect with other first-year students at joint activities and various events in and around Leoben held and offered as part of this tutorial project.
In the first six weeks of the winter semester, students complete the courses “Basic university skills” and “Introduction to the STEM subjects” as part of their introductory and orientation phase (STEOP). In the “Basic University Skills” course, students learn, for instance, the fundamentals of rhetoric and presentation techniques and how to use important MS-Office applications. The course “Introduction to the STEM subjects” provides an overview of the mathematical and scientific foundations of the degree programme. In addition to familiarizing students with the basic concepts of the respective subjects, first-year students gain an understanding of how the various subject areas are interconnected.
The first year of study is almost identical for everyone, regardless of which degree programme you have chosen. The purpose of this period is to bring all first-year students up to an equal and standard level of knowledge in the basic subjects (e.g., maths, chemistry, physics, mechanics, etc.). By standardising the first two semesters, it is also possible for you to change your field of study within this year of study without wasting valuable time.
