Admission to a Doctoral Programme

The basic requirement for admission to a doctoral programme at Montanuniversität Leoben is the completion of a subject-related diploma or master's programme.

Persons who have not completed a diploma or master's degree may also apply for admission to doctoral studies with another study programme that is eligible in terms of subject matter, if this study programme has at least the same level of education at a recognised post-secondary educational institution from Austria or abroad.

Curriculum Doctoral Programme

• Fully completed application for admission to the doctoral programme incl. Annex 1

1.) Online Preparation:

• Download the application for admission to a doctoral programme incl. Annex 1 and fill it out completely.
• Gather the necessary signatures that are listed on the form.
• Send the application for admission to a doctoral programme to the Study Support Centers.

2.) Completion of the Admission:

• Since your application is an individual request, it has to be approved by Montanuniversität Leoben after it has been checked.
• After your application has been approved, you will receive an email with information on how to pay tuition fees/student union fee, the pin code for your student account and your student identity card.
• Pay the tuition fees/student union fee immediately after your appointment. (Please make sure to enter the correct reference number!)
• After the university has received your payments (approx. 2-3 working days later), activate your MU-online student account with your PIN code. Please note that this code is only valid for a few days, after which you will have to apply for a new PIN code at the Study Support Center
• Activate your student identity card shortly after at one of the terminals at the Study Support Center for the upcoming semester.
• Register for your courses in good time.

• Degree certificate and degree record sheet or transcript of records of the Masterr's degree programme
• Passport or ID card
• Optional for third country nationals: residence permit

1.) Online Preparation:

• Download the application for admission to a doctoral programme incl. Annex 1 and fill it out completely.
• Create a basic account in MUonline of the university. Make sure to remember your login data so that you can manage your application.
• Enter the application for your desired study programme under the online pre-registration and upload the required documents.
• At the end, confirm that all the information you entered is correct in the summary and click on Send. Only then is your application submitted.

2.) Processing your application by the Montanuniversität:

• Your individual request will now be examined in terms of form and content. 
• Since your application is an individual request, it has to be approved by Montanuniversität Leoben after it has been checked.
• We will inform you about the assessment of the equivalence of your previous studies and the individual doctoral programme by the programme coordinator (this may take a few weeks) as soon as a decision has been made. 
• Admission is now possible directly or you must take supplementary courses within the first two semesters.

3.) Admission:

• You will receive an e-mail with the invitation to a personal appointment, bookable via Timfy, in order to present the original application documents in person at the Study Support Center:
  • Graduation documents of the Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes
  • Your identity documents (passport and, in the case of third-country nationals, residence permit) 
• As soon as the approval is granted, you will receive an e-mail with the payment information for the tuition / student union fee and the PIN code for your student account.
• After your appointment, pay the tuition fee/student union fee immediately. (Be sure to check the correct reference number!)
• After receipt of payment (approx. 2-3 working days later), activate your MU-online student account with your PIN code.
  Please note that this is only valid for a few days, after which you will have to apply for a new PIN code at the Study Support Center.
• During our opening hours, come directly to the Study Support Center and get your student ID.
• Register for courses in good time.

• Degree certificate and degree record sheet or transcript of records of the master's degree programme optionally with translation/apostille/full diplomatic certification

  Important: Documents in foreign languages must be translated into German or English by a sworn and court-certified interpreter!
