Requirements for your admission
The basic prerequisite for admission to a doctoral programme at Montanuniversität Leoben is the completion of a relevant diploma or master's programme.
Persons who have not completed a diploma or master's degree programme can also apply for admission to doctoral studies with another relevant degree programme, provided that this programme has at least the same level of education at a recognised post-secondary educational institution in Austria or abroad.
In order to be able to apply for admission to a doctoral programme at Montanuniversität Leoben, it is necessary to have coordinated the following in advance:

It is possible to apply for the "Doctoral Programme in montanistische Wissenschaften" or for the PhD programme "New Science and Technology".
What is the doctoral programme in “montanistische Wissenschaften” about?
It is an engineering degree in a scientific subject taught at Montanuniversität Leoben.
The subject area is based on the Chair of Supervision.
Language of instruction: German and English
It is completed with the academic degree: "DoktorIn der montanistischen Wissenschaften" (Dr.mont.)
What is the PhD program "New Science and Technology" about?
It is an interdisciplinary course of study for the development of technical and scientific skills. Here, material flows are considered in the context of production, consumption, utility and safety.
Topics: Circular economy, resource and energy efficiency, zero-waste concepts, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, sustainability, risk and safety aspects
Language of instruction: English (at least at level B2).
It should be noted that a Language Certificate is required.It is completed with the academic degree: "Doctor of Philosophy" (PhD)

1. Preparation:
Download the application for admission to the degree programme and fill it out completely (including Appendix 1).
Obtain the necessary signatures from the supervisor, mentor and the chair.
Send the application for admission to the degree programme by e-mail to the Office of the Dean of Studies (studkan(at)unileoben.ac.at).
2. Processing of your application by the Montanuniversität:
Your application will now be reviewed in terms of form and content. Please allow time for this step. You will be informed by e-mail.
3. Admission:
After your application has been approved, you will receive an email with information on how to pay tuition fees/student union fee, the pin code for your student account and your student identity card.
Now please pay the tuition fee/Students' Union fee immediately.
About 2-3 working days later, you can activate your MU-online student account with your PIN code. Please note, this PIN code is only valid for a few days.
Now you can register for the courses of your individual curriculum.

You will need the following documents, both in the original and as a scan:
Degree certificate and degree record sheet or transcript of records of the Bachelor's degree programme and
Degree certificate and degree record sheet or transcript of records of the Masterr's degree programme
Passport or ID card
Optional for third-country nationals: valid residence permit
What to do:

Download the application for admission to the degree programme and fill it out completely (including Appendix 1).
Obtain the necessary signatures from the supervisor, mentor and the chair.
Create a basic account in MUonline. Remember your access data to be able to manage your application.
Enter the application for your desired study programme under the online pre-registration (Instructions) form and upload the required documents.
At the end, confirm the correctness of all information in the summary and click on Send. Only then is your application submitted.
2. Processing of your application by the Montanuniversität:
Your application will now be reviewed in terms of form and content. Please allow time for this step. You will be informed by e-mail.
3. Admission:
You will receive an e-mail inviting you to a personal appointment to present the original application documents in person at the Study Support Center:
Graduation documents of the Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes
Passport or ID card
For third-country nationals: a valid residence permit
You will now receive the payment information for the tuition fee, the PIN code for your student account.
Please pay the tuition/Students' Union fee immediately after your appointment.
About 2-3 working days later, you can activate your MUonline student account with your PIN code. Please note, this PIN code is only valid for a few days.
Come directly to the Study Support Center during opening hours and pick up your student ID.
Now you can register for the courses of your individual curriculum.
You will need the following documents, both in the original and as a scan:
Degree certificate and degree record sheet or transcript of records of the Bachelor's degree programme with translation/apostille/full diplomatic certification
Degree certificate and degree record sheet or transcript of records of the master's degree programme optionally with translation/apostille/full diplomatic certification
Passport or ID card
Optional for third-country nationals: valid residence permit card
Important: Foreign-language documents must be translated into German or English by a generally sworn and court-certified interpreter.

FAQs and important information
Can I attend courses at other universities in Austria and abroad and include them in my individual curriculum?
In principle, it is also possible to complete subject-related courses at other recognized domestic and foreign universities and post-secondary educational institutions. However, this requires that the doctoral student is admitted to attend the course and to take the examination. The doctoral student must have the recognition of the achievement approved in advance by the study law body.
Courses at other domestic universities: These courses can only be included in the individual curriculum if the corresponding course (or the same course content) is not offered at Montanuniversität Leoben. Prior consultation with your supervisor is strongly recommended.
Courses at foreign universities: Recognition is generally possible, provided that the relevant provisions of the curriculum are complied with. As a rule, this requires prior consultation with the supervisor and the submission of suitable documents (e.g. course description, ECTS scope).
How do I put together my individual curriculum?
It is strongly recommended that you coordinate the individual curriculum with your supervisor in advance.
As a general rule, the following applies: As part of the doctoral programme, courses worth 20 ECTS credits must be completed. The following must be taken into account:
General non-subject-specific courses, for example on scientific methods, philosophy, history and ethics of research, can be accepted as free electives with up to 4 ECTS credits.
Participation in doctoral seminars, privatissima and comparable courses of the chairs supporting the dissertation can be taken into account with up to 4 ECTS credits.
Participation in Summer/Winter Schools can be taken into account with up to 4 ECTS credits.

SIf you want to resume your discontinued doctoral studies, you will need to submit a new "Application for Admission to the Degree Programme".

As a doctoral student employed at Montanuniversität, do I still have to check my student email account regularly?
Yes. In any case, it is necessary that you regularly check and read the messages sent to your student e-mail address. You can also set up automatic forwarding. Please note that you should deactivate this forwarding after the end of your employment relationship so that you can continue to receive all relevant communications.
I have an employment relationship with the Montanuniversität Leoben. Does this mean that I am automatically enrolled as a doctoral candidate?
No. An employment relationship with the Montanuniversität Leoben does not automatically lead to enrolment in a doctoral programme. A separate admission or application is required for admission.
