Required Proofs of Language Proficency

Study Programmes with German as Language of Instruction and Examination:

For all German taught study programmes, you are requested to provide proof of at least B2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

The following certificates can be accepted:

  1. Österreichisches Sprachdiplom Deutsch (Austrian language certificate for German) – at least ÖSD Certificate B2;
  2. Goethe-Institut e. V. – at least Goethe-certificate German B2;
  3. Deutsche Sprachprüfung der Kultusministerkonferenz (German Language Certificate of the Education Ministers Conference) – at least Second Level (DSD II);
  4. Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (German language examination for university entrance) – at least DSH II;
  5. Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache (Test of German as a foreign language) – at least TDN 4;
  6. telc German – at least B2;
  7. Austrian Intergration Fund - ÖIF Test B2, Integration Exam B2,
  8. Completion certificate of the supplementary examination in the subject of German passed in a university preparation programme of an Austrian university - at least on B2 level,
  9. Successful completion of the school leaving examination in the subject of German, provided that the educational regulations of the issuing country stipulate at least level B2,
  10. Certificate confirming completion of at least eight years of education at a school in a German-speaking country/region or at an Austrian or German school abroad with German as the language of instruction.
  11. Completion of at least two years of higher education with German as the language of instruction at a recognised domestic or foreign post-secondary educational institution, provided that German is stipulated as the language of instruction in the Diploma Supplement, Transcript of Records or degree certificate.

The language certificates listed under points 1 to 7 cannot be older than 2 years at the time of submission.

 

Students with language skills of at least A2 level can take the required language courses and examinations as part of the University Preparation Programme at Montanuniversität Leoben.

The following A2 certificates can be accepted:

  1. Österreichisches Sprachdiplom Deutsch (Austrian language certificate for German)  - ÖSD-Certificate A2,
  2. Goethe - Institut e.V. - Goethe Certificate A2,
  3. Deutsche Sprachprüfung der Kultusministerkonferenz (German Language Certificate of the Education Ministers Conference) - First Level (DSD I),
  4. telc German - A2,
  5. Austrian Integration Fund (ÖIF) - ÖIF Test A2

The language certificates cannot be older than 2 years at the time of submission.

Study Programmes with English as Language of Instruction and Examination:

For all English taught study programmes, you are requested to provide proof of at least B2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

The following certificates can be accepted:

  1. Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE): with a minimum score of 160,
  2. Cambridge English First Certificate (FCE): with a grade of C or higher (at least 160 points),
  3. TOEFL (internet-based test), examination date until 20.01.2026: with a minimum score of 80 or higher,
  4. TOEFL (paper-based test), examination date until 20.01.2026: with a minimum score of 550 or higher,
  5. TOEFL, examination date from 21.01.2026: with a minimum score of 4 or higher,
  6. IELTS academic: with an Overall Band Score of 6.0 or higher,
  7. Duolingo English Test: with a minimum score of 110 or higher,
  8. Pearson Test of English: with a minimum score of 59 or higher,
  9. Completion certificate of the supplementary examination in the subject of English passed in a university preparation programme of an Austrian university - at least on B2 level,
  10. Successful completion of the school leaving examination in the subject of English, provided that the educational regulations of the issuing country stipulate at least level B2,
  11. Completion of at least two years of higher education with English as the language of instruction at a recognised domestic or foreign post-secondary educational institution, provided that English is stipulated as the language of instruction in the Diploma Supplement, Transcript of Records or degree certificate.

Curricula for joint study programmes under § 54d UG, whose language of instruction is English, may contain stricter requirements than those specified above.

 

The language certificates listed under points 1 to 8 cannot be older than 2 years at the time of submission.

 

Students with language skills of at least A2 level can take the required language courses and examinations as part of the University Preparation Programme at Montanuniversität Leoben.

The following A2 certificates can be accepted:

  1. Cambridge Certificate Key English Test (KET), scale score 120-139,
  2. TOEFL iBT, examination date until 20.01.2026: with a minimum score of 41 or higher,
  3. TOEFL iBT, examination date from 21.01.2026: with a minimum score of 2 or higher,
  4. TOEFL Essentials overall band score 3,0 - 4,5
  5. telc English - A2

The language certificates cannot be older than 2 years at the time of submission.
