On this page, you will find country-specific information about admission requirements and the documents required to apply for admission to Montanuniversität Leoben.

Applicants with high school diplomas from Austria, the EU, or the EEA that meet the general university entrance criteria, or qualify them for university admission, do not have any additional admission requirements, apart from the required language proficiency and, depending on the chosen bachelor's program, a supplementary exam in descriptive geometry.

For applicants with qualifications from non-EU countries, country-specific regulations apply; the relevant details are listed below. This information is regularly updated and revised.

Admission with Secondary School Qualifications from the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland

Under certain conditions, British secondary school qualifications may be recognized as equivalent to the Austrian Matura. To qualify for admission, applicants must provide proof of specific subjects, levels, and grades.

Requirements in Detail

• Applicants must have passed four independent general education subjects, which must include:
  • One language
  • Mathematics
  • One subject from Biology, Physics, or Chemistry
  • One humanities subject
• At least three of the four subjects must have been completed at GCE Advanced Level (A Level)
• The fourth subject must be demonstrated at GCSE or IGCSE level
• All four subjects must have been graded A*, A, B, or C
• The Advanced Supplementary Level (AS) may be treated as equivalent to GCSE/IGCSE for the purpose of this regulations.
• The International Advanced Level (IAL) may be treated as equivalent to GCE A Level for the purpose of this regulations
• Language examinations in English taken outside the GCSE, IGCSE, GCE, or IAL framework will not be recognized for the assessment of general university entrance qualifications
• For applicants whose native language is German: the subject German may only be counted at GCSE/IGCSE level, regardless of the level at which it was completed

Admission with a U.S. High School Diploma

A U.S. High School Diploma (HSD) alone does not meet the general university entrance qualification required for admission to Austrian universities. Applicants must therefore provide additional qualifications, such as results from the Advanced Placement Program (APP), the SAT, the ACT, or evidence of two years of study at a recognized postsecondary institution.

Advanced Placement Program (APP)

Applicants must have completed at least four Advanced Placement (AP) exams, including:

• One language exam
• One mathematics exam

Grades must be higher than 2.

If one of the specified subjects (mathematics or language) cannot be documented, or if only three AP exams have been completed, supplementary examinations through the Montanuniversität Leoben preparatory course may be required.

SAT

Applicants must achieve a combined total of 1360 points in the two sections "Math" and “Evidence-Based Reading and Writing.” With a score of 1220 points, proof of additional academic achievements corresponding to one academic year is required.

ACT

The required Composite Score depends on the test date:

• Up to and including May 2014: 28 points
• From June 2014 onward: 29 points

With a score of 23 points (up to May 2014) or 25 points (from June 2014 onward), proof of additional academic achievements corresponding to one academic year is required.

Associate Degree

A U.S. High School Diploma combined with a completed two-year Associate Degree generally fulfills the general university entrance qualification. However, Montanuniversität Leoben must conduct a detailed content review of your specific qualifications.

Admission with an IB Diploma

Bangladesh

Admission to Bachelor’s Programmes

The general university entrance qualification for admission to a bachelor’s degree program can only be demonstrated by

• Higher Secondary Certificate and
• Proof of two years of full-time study at a recognized institution of higher education
• A passing rate of at least 80% or a CGPA of at least 3.75/4.00

Admission to Master’s Programmes

Admission to a master’s programme requires 

• VFS Competency Check (Score above 50%)
• proof of a bachelor’s degree that is equivalent to an Austrian bachelor’s degree and academically eligible for the chosen master’s program.

The following may be considered equivalent to a bachelor’s degree:

• A bachelor’s programme of at least four years of full-time study at a
• recognized university listed in CEP Section 1 of ENIC NARIC AUSTRIA
• A CGPA of at least 3.75/4.00 or 80% of the maximum possible grade

Or

• A bachelor’s degree programme of at least four years of full-time study at
• A recognized university listed in Section 2 or 3 according to ENIC NARIC AUSTRIA
• A CGPA of at least 3.75/4.00 or 80% of the maximum academic performance
• And a completed master’s degree (2 academic years, CGPA of at least 3.75/4.00 or 80% of the maximum academic performance)

Ghana

Admission to Bachelor’s Programmes

The general university entrance qualification for admission to a bachelor’s degree programme can be demonstrated as follows:

I. High School Diploma

• WASSCE, issued by WAEC or NECO
• At least six subjects graded A1–C6, including at least two languages, mathematics, one science subject, one humanities subject, and one additional general education subject, and
• Proof of one academic year of active study or two supplementary exams in the preparatory program.

Vocational subjects such as (selection) Animal Husbandry, Fisheries, Business Management, Financial Accounting or Woodwork do not substitute for general education coursework.

Admission to Master’s Programmes

Admission to a master’s programme requires proof of a bachelor’s degree that is equivalent to an Austrian bachelor’s degree and academically eligible for the chosen master’s programme.

The following may be considered equivalent to a bachelor’s degree:

• A full-time bachelor’s degree from
• a recognized university listed in CEP Sections 1 and 2 of ENIC NARIC AUSTRIA.

India

Admission to Bachelor’s Programmes

To prove general university entrance qualification, applicants must submit:

• their higher secondary school-leaving certificate
• the certificate of the 10th school year.

Admission requirements:

• completion of the required subject combination, consisting of two languages, Mathematics, one natural science subject, one humanities subject and one additional general education subject.
• a percentage of marks of at least 70%.

Please note:

• Depending on the percentage achieved and missing contents according to the required subject combination, completion of the University Preparation Programme may be required. The number and subjects of examinations are determined individually.
• Admission on the basis of 10 years of schooling in combination with a subsequent three-year diploma is not possible.
• Indian certificates and official documents must be apostilled.

Admission to Master’s Programmes

For admission to a Master’s programme, a Bachelor’s degree from India must meet the following criteria:

• minimum duration of three years of full-time study
• at a recognized higher education institution classified as Section 1 or Section 2 (according to the ENIC NARIC AUSTRIA Credential Evaluation)
• with an overall academic performance of at least 60%

or

• minimum duration of three years of full-time study
• at a recognized state higher education institution classified as Section 3) according to the ENIC NARIC AUSTRIA Credential Evaluation)
• with an overall academic performance of at least 60%.

Please note: 

• Admission to on the basis of a Bachelor’s degree from a private higher education institution classified as Section 3 (according to the ENIC NARIC AUSTRIA Credential Evaluation) is not possible.
• Indian certificates and official documents must be apostilled.

Nepal

Admission to Bachelor’s Programmes

To prove general university entrance qualification, applicants must submit:

• higher secondary school-leaving grade sheet
• grade sheet from the 10th school year.

Admission requirements:

• completion of the required subject combination, consisting of two languages, Mathematics, one natural science subject, one humanities subject and one additional general education subject.
• a percentage of marks of at least 70%.

Please note:

• Depending on the percentage achieved and missing contents according to the required subject combination, completion of the University Preparation Programme may be required. The number and subjects of examinations are determined individually.

Admission to Master’s Programmes

For admission to a Master's programme, the Bachelor’s degree from Nepal must meet the following criteria:

• minimum duration of four years of full-time study
• overall academic performance of at least 80%, or alternatively a CGPA of at least 3.5.

• Nepalese certificates and official documents require full diplomatic legalization.

Nigeria

Admission to Bachelor’s Programmes

The general university entrance qualification required for admission to a bachelor's degree programme may be demonstrated in the following ways:

I. School-leaving Certificate:

To demonstrate general university entrance qualification, submit:

• WASSCE issued by WAEC or NECO (original certificate)
• UTME

Admission requirements:

• Required subject profile: two languages, Mathematics, one natural science, one humanities subject, and one additional general-education subject
• At least six general-education subjects with a minimum grade of Credit (A1–C6)

Please note: 

• Vocational subjects (e.g., Animal Husbandry, Fisheries, Business Management, Financial Accounting, Woodwork) do not replace general-education content.
• Depending on grades and any gaps in the required subject profile, completion of the University Preparation Programme (Vorstudienlehrgang) may be required. The number and subjects of the subjects to be taken are set on a case-by-case basis.
• Full diplomatic legalization is required for Nigerian certificates and documents.

II. Higher National Diploma (HND) or completed three-year bachelor’s degree:

Eligible qualifications:

• A completed bachelor’s degree of at least three years with an overall positive result (overall score at least 50%), or
• A successfully completed two-year HND

Please note:

• Depending on the content and result of the HND, completion of the University Preparation Programme (Vorstudienlehrgang) may be required. The number and subjects of the subjects to be taken are set on a case-by-case basis.
• Full diplomatic legalization is required for Nigerian certificates and documents.

Admission to Master’s Programmes

The bachelor’s degree must meet one of the following sets of criteria: 

• Minimum duration: 4 years (full-time)
• Academic performance: at least 50% overall positive result (minimum Second-Class Lower Division)
• The awarding university is classified as Section 1 (per ENIC NARIC AUSTRIA Credential Evaluation)

or

• Minimum duration: 5 years (full-time)
• Academic performance: at least 50% overall positive result (minimum Second-Class Lower Division)
• The awarding university is classified as Section 2 (per ENIC NARIC AUSTRIA Credential Evaluation)

• Full diplomatic legalization is required for Nigerian certificates and documents.

Pakistan

Admission to Bachelor’s Programmes

To prove general university entrance qualification, applicants must submit:

• The higher secondary school-leaving certificate
• The 10^th grade certificate

Admission requirements:

• Required subject profile: two languages, Mathematics, one natural science, one humanities subject, and one additional general-education subject
• Overall result of at least 80% of the maximum attainable points

Please note:

• Depending on the score achieved and any gaps in the subject profile, completion of the University Preparation Programme (Vorstudienlehrgang) may be required. The number and subjects of examinations are to be determined on a case-by-case basis.
• If the overall performance is below 80% (but above 50%), the deficit can be substituted by two positively completed, full-time study years at a recognized higher education institution (each with at least 80% of the maximum attainable points)
• Admission based on 10 years of schooling in combination with a subsequent three-year diploma is not possible
• Full diplomatic legalization is required for Pakistani certificates and documents.

Admission to Master’s Programmes

For admission to a Master’s programme, a Bachelor’s degree from Pakistan must meet the following criteria:

• Minimum duration: 4 years (full-time)
• Awarded by a recognized higher education institution classified as Section 1 (according to the ENIC NARIC Austria Credential Evaluation)
• Overall academic performance of at least 70%

or

• Minimum duration: 4 years (full-time)
• Awarded by a recognized public/state university (not private!) classified as Section 2 (according to the ENIC NARIC Austria Credential Evaluation)
• Overall academic performance of at least 80%

Please note:

• With a Bachelor’s degree awarded from a higher education institution classified as Section 3 or 4 (according to the ENIC NARIC Austria Credential Evaluation), admission to a Master’s programme is not possible.
• Full diplomatic legalization is required for Pakistani certificates and documents.
