Admission for a Bachelor's programme
Study programmes at Montanuniversität begin in the winter and summer semester. However, it is best to begin in the winter semester. All students with school-leaving certificates can study at Montanuniversität.
All students with a positive school-leaving certificate can start studying at the Montanuniversität Leoben. There is no selection process and the number of places is unlimited.
Anyone without a school-leaving certificate may sit the equivalency test to determine if they are ready for undergraduate studies (bachelor's programmes) at university. You can take equivalency tests for engineering and mining studies at Graz University of Technology.
Students can only be enrolled and matriculated during the matriculation periods. Please note: there are no exceptions to this rule.
Admission for Austrian an German students
You have acquired your school-leaving certificate (Matura) in Austria or Germany, then follow these steps for enrollment/inscription.
You will need the following documents both as originals and as scans:
- Passport or identity card
- Complete school leaving certificate with all pages
- Optional: if you are transferring from another Austrian university, additionally, you will need to provide the certificate of graduation and the study record sheet
- Optional: proof of English language proficiency for enrolment in an English-taught Bachelor's degree programme, if English is not clearly stated on your school-leaving certificate.
What to do:
1.) Online preparation:
- Create a basic account in the university's MUonline portal. Make sure to save and remember your log-in credentials so that you can manage your application.
- Enter the application for your desired degree programme under the online pre-registration and upload the required documents. Video
- At the end, confirm the veracity of all information in the summary and click on Send. Your application has now been properly submitted.
2.) Personal completion of the admission process:
- Book an appointment for enrolment via Timify, or come directly to the Study Support Centre during our opening hours.
- Bring all the above-mentioned documents in ORIGINAL format with you to enrolment appointment. After a short review of your documents, you will receive your matriculation number, the payment information for the tuition fee/student union fee, the PIN code for your student account, and your student ID card.
- Pay the tuition fee immediately after your appointment. (Pay attention to the correct reference number!)
- Activate your MU-online student account with your PIN code after receipt of payment. For this, wait approx. 2-3 business days after you have completed the payment. Please note that the PIN code is only valid for a few days. In case your PIN code is not valid anymore, you can request a new one from the Study Support Centre.
- Activate your student ID for the upcoming semester at one of the terminals available in the SSC as soon as possible.
- Familiarise yourself with your digital curriculum support under ‘My studies’.
- Register for courses in due time.
Please note that the application for admission to Bachelor's degree programmes can only be submitted during the respective deadlines.

Please bring the following documents when enrolling for the first time to Study Support Center:
You will need to bring the originals of the following documents:
- Passport or birth certificate/proof of citizenship combined with an ID-card
- School-leaving certificate or equivalent certificate
- If transferring from another Austrian university, you will also need to bring: leaving certificate and student statistics form.
Once you show evidence of the above mentioned documents at the Study Support Center (Peter Tunner-Straße 23/II) you will receive a enrollment folder and a form, which you will need to fill in in order to complete your admission.
The students' union membership fee EUR 22.70 per semester) needs to be paid as quickly as possible. You will receive the payment form at enrollment. You must use your reference number for the payment to be made.
Once the transaction has gone through (2-3 working days), you can activate and sign into your MU-Online account as well as sign-up for classes. For the first access to your MU-Online account, you will need the PIN code given to you at registration.

If your pin has expired, you can get a new one from the Study Support Center ssc(at)unileoben.ac.at.
- Onlinepre-registration
- Students from EU/EEA countries and Switzerland are advised to send the documents listed below to admission(at)unileoben.ac.at first. The Study Support Center will check your documents regarding equivalence etc.
- Application for Admission in the downloadcenter
- Proof of general university entrance qualification (school leaving certificate)
- Copy of passport
- CV
- Proof of language proficiency:
- For German taught programmes: Proficiency level A2 GERS when applying and B2 GERS when at the start of the programme
- For English taught programmes (may vary depending on the program): IELTS (minimum 6 points) or TOEFL ibt (minimum 80 points) or TOEFL pbt (minimum 550 points) or TOELF cbt (minimum 213 points).
After pre-registering/applying for a degree program, enroll at the Study Support Center during the admission period with the following original documents:
- Passport
- School-leaving certificate
- If transferring from another Austrian university, you will also need to bring: Confirmation of Withdrawal ('Abgangsbescheinigung') and Student record sheet ('Studienblatt')
You are welcome to visit the Study Support Center anytime during the admissions period during our opening hours of 09:00 AM to 12:00 Monday through Friday, or make an appointment in advance through Timify.

You have not obtained your school-leaving certificate Austria, an EU or EEA country? Then please follow these steps to apply for a Bachelor's programme. You can apply for studies throughout the year.

- You are exempt from proof of English language proficiency (depending on study program) if:
- Your mother tongue is English or
- You have an academic degree with English as the predominant language of instruction
- You can find the language of instruction for your study programme here at Quick info before your stay. Study programmes that are not listed here under "study programmes in English" have German as the language of instruction.
Make sure to upload all the required documents fully diplomatically legalised and translated to English or German (if the originals are not yet in English or German).

Please inform yourself in advance about exactly how the documents have to be legalised. It is important to know that the legalisation of documents can often take several months, so you should allow enough time for this.
Please note that incorrectly legalised documents will slow down the admission process and you may therefore not be admitted to the desired semester.
